CREED C. BLACK, JR. is a sole practitioner in Philadelphia, whose law practice is devoted to defending clients in government investigations, grand jury proceedings, civil enforcement actions, and “white collar” criminal prosecutions. Mr. Black has 40 years of experience in criminal law, as both a former federal prosecutor and defense attorney.

Prior to opening his law office in 1996, Mr. Black was a partner for more than ten years in the litigation department of the prestigious Philadelphia law firm Ballard Spahr LLP, where he handled both civil and criminal matters. He is a graduate of Yale University (B.A. magna cum laude 1973) and the University of Pennsylvania Law School (J.D. cum laude 1976). He is a member of the Order of the Coif.

Following a federal court clerkship, Mr. Black was recruited into the Honors Program at the U.S. Justice Department in 1977. He served as a federal prosecutor for five years, working in the Criminal Division (Organized Crime Section) in Washington, D.C.; Alexandria, VA; Cleveland, OH; and Philadelphia, PA. His government service ended in 1982, and he has since worked as a defense attorney for the past 35 years.

Mr. Black is a longtime member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL); the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL); and a past officer of the Federal Criminal Law Committee for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Black  speaks on issues of criminal law and procedure, and in the past he has served as a program moderator at PACDL’s annual “For the Experienced” Seminar, instructing other criminal defense attorneys on White Collar Practice.

Mr. Black was recognized in 1999 by Philadelphia Magazine as one of the City’s “Best Lawyers.” He was again recognized in 2004 by Law & Politics Magazine in their inaugural Pennsylvania Super Lawyers publication as a “Pennsylvania Super Lawyer,” and also as one of Philadelphia’s “Top 100 Super Lawyers.”  In each of the past 14 years he has maintained his ranking as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer in the field of Criminal Defense: White Collar, most recently in the 2017 edition, an honor reserved for the top 5% of attorneys state-wide.

 

Mr. Black has been consistently selected by his peers over the past 20 years for inclusion among The Best Lawyers in America, most recently appearing in the 2018 edition in the category of Criminal Defense: White Collar.  For the 2011 year, Mr. Black was also honored to be named by that publication as "Philadelphia Best Lawyers Criminal Defense: White-Collar Lawyer of the Year."

 

Mr. Black has  been named in each of the last 12 years by Chambers and Partners’ Publishing as one of America’s top lawyers in “White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations,” most recently receiving a Band 1 ranking in the 2017 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.

He is experienced in "high profile" matters, such as the Enron Task Force investigation (Houston); the Rite Aid corporate fraud prosecution (Harrisburg); the Philadelphia City Hall political corruption investigation;and the Penn State University child abuse grand jury investigation.
